For 25 years I was primarily a monotype printmaker. During the past 4 years I have been working almost exclusively drawing on archival paper with oil sticks (not to be confused with oil or hard pastels).
Printmaking and drawing present different challenges, both technically and conceptually. My monotype printmaking demands that a piece be fully realized within a single art-making session. Drawing allows me to develop work over an extended period.
Whatever the medium, all my work is process driven – each piece evolves as I react to the mark that went before. Nothing is predetermined. My monotype imagery was primarily non-objective. However, my longtime practice of figure drawing has recently led to figurative depictions in my work.
Whether printmaking or drawing, each session in the studio is an exploration of technique and imagery. For me, the magic of art-making continues unabated.
Raised in the NYC Metropolitan area, Eva Bernstein’s formative years were spent visiting art museums: MOMA, The Metropolitan, The Whitney. That early exposure sparked a life-long love of art. After receiving a B.A. from SUNY Stony Brook, Ms. Bernstein was accepted into Pratt Institute’s M.F.A. program in printmaking. Following her move to

Following her move to California’s Central Coast, Eva had a successful career as a graphic designer while continuing her art education in classes and workshops at UC Santa Cruz and Monterey Peninsula College. Ms. Bernstein was the first president of the MPC Printmakers, a national association. Now a full-time artist Eva’s practice consists of drawing and printmaking. In 2010 Ms. Bernstein was a founding artist of DoonArt, the annual Bonny Doon Studio Tour. Eva is a member of the California Society of Printmakers. Her work has been exhibited across the USA and is held in numerous private collections.
